austin poker club trial date postponed

For those of you interested in the continuing saga of the Austin Poker Club, 9+ months have passed since it was shut down and they still have not gone to trial. There have been numerous delays and date resets.

The trial date had been set for February 17th, but I just heard from the APC owner that the court date has once again been postponed and they’re going to need to go through pre-trial motions before a new date is set.

I expect it will be at least another couple months before they make it to trial. You’ll hear it first here since the case seems to have dropped off most other people’s radars.

espn cancels ‘playmakers’

ESPN announced today that it has canceled ‘Playmakers’ after one season. ESPN had drawn a lot of heat from the NFL about ‘Playmakers’. Link

Oddly enough, though, one of the series in the running for a replacement to ‘Playmakers’ is a series called ‘The Fix’. The commissioned pilot is to be written by the writers of Rounders and is about gambling on college football. Link

I’d love to see a show about sports gambling, but I don’t see any way ESPN would go for and risk angering the NCAA after the heat the NFL gave them for ‘Playmakers’. The NCAA is vehemently anti-gambling and fights any links between its name and gambling.

After pistol-whipping some players and ordering the men and women to give up their wallets and strip, the robbers ransacked a room in the clubhouse, said Reynolds, who was not injured but lost $60 to the robbers. At the last minute, the game’s organizer had reduced the amount players had to bring from $100 per 150 tournament chips to $25 for the same number of chips to attract more players. Twenty to 25 people attended.

The robbers stole the $1,000 prize money and about $1,000 more from the victims, Rodriguez said.

The main tidbit I’ve heard that wasn’t covered in the story was that the first thing the thieves apparently did was to slot online walk up to each table and pistol-whip the biggest or strongest looking guy at each table. I’ve heard a couple other things, but nothing substantiated enough to write about here.

The main takeaway from this whole thing is that robbing home slot online games simply is not worth it; poker games generate the image of a lot of cash in play, but the reality is that the average low or mid buyin home game doesn’t really have all that money in play. So note to thieves: if you’re going to coordinate a four-person armed robbery, please give strong consideration to alternatives to poker games. There are much better targets out there.

There’s a funny article in the Boston Herald about a group of retirees who just got busted for running a senior citizen’s illegal poker club.

Each night for five years, 60-something hostesses would serve cocktails to heavy-smoking seniors as they tested their luck in poker and on video games, authorities said.

Richard Marcus, author of the recent book on casino cheating, American Roulette, has started a blog. While much of it is straight marketing for his book, he has written some interesting tidbits that have at least piqued my interest in his book.

An Italian roulette cheating team that I first met over two decades ago when my team and theirs literally bumped into one another while cheating at the same roulette table in Lake Tahoe (see page 122 in my book AMERICAN ROULETTE) was out in force all over the Vegas Strip. One of my surveillance informants who works at a Strip casino themed after one of the more popular major cities in the world, recognized one of the Italians, who was dressed up as a goblin, by a tattoo on the back of his hand. I’m told the tattooed hand was sliding a stack of roulette chips from a losing number to the winning number before the dealer got his marker straight up on the layout.

One of the things I dislike about general media coverage and fictional portrayals of poker and other casino-related activities is how much of them tend to focus on cheats and hustlers, to the point of making that seem like that’s all there is out there.

That said, those stories are often more exciting and have a lot more conflict and intrigue than a straight “Johnny won at poker” story.

I know this blog has been languishing but I am working long hours and don’t have much time to get anything close to something resembling a post. I don’t have internet access anywhere but at work and hardly can get on even then. If you have been paying attention to this space please forgive me.

Not much sanghoki playin’ goin on up here. Have only been able to play some heads up with Rusty, a not so exciting .25 BB (max bet .50) game, and an interesting stop at the Golden Nugget in Tukwila, WA on the way up to Alaska. Story on this interesting experience will hit once I get a break.

Twice on this Alaska trip Rusty has whipped out the bad beat on me with 2 different full houses to beat my smaller full house once and my trip Aces another.

Hopefully we will get some better games up here soon. I am going CRAZY!

Other than work and the occassional bite to eat there is much ado about nothing here. I am however getting my earn on and building that bankroll for my trip on Jan. 6th. to the 6th annual Jack Binion’s World sanghoki Open.

Alaska Nightmarin’

To make a long story short. Alaska was a nightmare. We leave out on Monday and find out on Wednesday that the work we need to do can’t be done for about 10 days. So as of right now I am sitting in Seattle, Washington on the 2nd leg of my trip coming home.

To put things in perspective it basically takes 2 days of trip to get from Huntsvegas to where we are working in Alaska and vice versa. Nightmare isn’t the half of it.

sanghoki was a wash as such. I will be returning to Alaska late next week to finish the work that we didn’t even get to start. The only upside???? Buildin those frequent flyer miles! When and if the Alaskan Poker Championships happen you will hear about it first.

Having a large chip stack at your table in a poker tournament can be an ideal situation. With a large chip stack you can’t be knocked out in one hand and you can send smaller chip stacks running by making large bets.

However, having a big chip stack isn’t always ideal. If you don’t play it right you can go from a large stack to busted out in just a few hands.

I posted again last night, after my “Yeesh” post, but Blogger decided to destroy the precious content. Don’t know where it went, but its gone. Anyhow, I had a nice swing back, and actually finished the night with a $130 profit after a great run of cards late in the evening. These swings at 2/4 full are incredible — unlike anything I ever saw at 1/2 and .50/1… makes me wonder what it must be like up at 15/30, the variance capitol of the Poker World.

Got some nice Slot Demo messages & comments about my last few posts. Really appreciate the support folks, particularly when it contains needed perspective. One individual commented that:

And he’s right. The hand I posted was most certainly not a horrific beat. It just came at the wrong time. You know what I’m saying. With 35K hands in my PT database (even I was amazed at that number), I’m getting a new feel for the patterns of the game, but the recent spate of swings tested that knowledge dearly.

“Good point about the “double reverse suckout.” I failed to think about that at the time, though I guess I posted it just in the spur of the moment as it *seemed* bad and came so quickly after I had posted. At any rate, things turned around later in the night (actually turned a large profit for the day), and like you say, I continue to pound, pound, pound with superior hands.

The blog isn’t always pretty to read, but I’m sure as you know, it can be a very effective tool for venting. Positive venting, when you want to share how great a win is, and negative venting when you just need to steam off about a crappy run of hands/results. Either way, emotions are best played out off the tables rather than on them, and I think we’re all fortunate to have an outlet where that is possible.
